Step-by-Step Guide to Sizing Your Whole Home Generator

Choosing the right size for a whole-home generator is critical to ensure your home remains powered during outages without compromising efficiency or safety. Step 1: List Appliances and Devices

Begin by identifying the appliances and systems you want to power during an outage. Common essentials include:

  • Refrigerator/Freezer: Keeps food safe.
  • HVAC Systems: Maintains heating or cooling, especially critical in extreme weather.
  • Lighting: Ensures visibility and safety.

Step 2: Determine Wattage Requirements

  • Lighting (10 LED bulbs): 100 running watts
  • Total Running Watts: 700 + 4,000 + 1,000 + 100 = 5,800 watts
  • Highest Starting Watts: 12,000 (Central AC)
  • Total Watts Needed: 5,800 + 12,000 = 17,800 watts
  • With 20% Safety Margin: 17,800 × 1.2 = 21,360 watts

A generator with at least 22 kW capacity would be suitable for this scenario.


Step 4: Consider Home Size and Fuel Type

Larger homes or those with high-demand systems (e.g., multiple HVAC units) require higher-capacity generators. As a general guideline:

  • Homes under 1,500 sq ft: 10–14 kW for essentials.
  • Homes 1,500–3,000 sq ft: 18–26 kW for most needs, including HVAC.
  • Homes over 3,000 sq ft: 24–60 kW for comprehensive coverage.


Fuel type also impacts sizing:

  • Natural Gas: Convenient for homes with a gas line, but may deliver slightly less power (65–80% of gasoline).
  • Propane: Ideal for rural areas, with stable storage in large tanks.
